Canterbury’s Official Rugby World Cup 2011 Fanzone
Add to my REAL NZ Festival trip planner Added to your REAL NZ Festival trip plannerCanterbury’s official Fanzone in Christchurch will be free to the public and will feature the Ruck, two giant screens, a mini rugby ground with REAL New Zealand grass banked by grandstands on all sides, a bar and food area and a stage for live entertainment.
The Fanzone, stemming from the Events Village in North Hagley Park, will be operating for the entire tournament and every match (all 48 of them) will be screened live.
As well as being entertained by the rugby, hunker down for a good celebration and some good fun.
Daily entertainment will include live bands, pre-match entertainment, Rippa Rugby, the New Zealand Army Marching Band, and The Outwits on stage with their Complete History of World Rugby (Abridged).
The Ruck, Christchurch City Council’s air inflated dome, will be open daily from 9am to 6pm. Go back in time and let nostalgia take over your senses. Seven interactive rugby nostalgia lounges will be themed on different eras: Up to 40s: Kiwi Bach; 1950s: Kitchen; 1960s: Cocktail Set; 1970s: Think Big Lounge; 1980s: Crash – Student Flat; 1990s: Y2K – Home Office and 2000s: State of the Art – The Millennium Lounge.
Magic moments from Kiwi screens big and small, and a programme of classic New Zealand short films will be screened in a souped-up retro Kiwi caravan called ‘New Zealand on Screen’, which will be parked up in Hagley Park for the last two weeks of Rugby World Cup 2011.
RugbyFest will be a highlight of the second weekend of October. This is the quarter-final match on the New Zealand side of the draw, the match Christchurch was most looking forward to hosting, until the earthquake struck. But you can’t keep a good Cantabrian down. The celebrations will go on, and RugbyFest will create an atmosphere that will be as close as you can get to the real thing. Extra screens and loads of great entertainment will build on the Fanzone programme.
This will be a spectacular event, adding to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding Hagley Park during the Cup and giving you another good reason to get down to the Fanzone and be part of the action!
