Eastern Southland Gallery: Ralph Hotere Collection & John Money Collection
Add to my REAL NZ Festival trip planner Added to your REAL NZ Festival trip plannerThe Eastern Southland Gallery is a public art museum in Gore featuring significant permanent exhibitions including the Ralph Hotere Collection and the John Money Collection.
Tucked away near the bottom of the South Island, the small southern heartland town of Gore is known as the World Capital of Brown Trout Fishing and the home of the famous Gold Guitar Country Music Awards. It is also where you'll find the Eastern Southland Gallery.
This gem of an art museum features permanent exhibitions of national and international note and houses one of the largest and most significant permanent exhibitions of graphic works and paintings by major New Zealand contemporary artist, Ralph Hotere.
Born in Northland and of Te Aupōuri descent, Hotere has lived and worked in Otago since 1969 and is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important artists.
The other significant permanent exhibition in the Eastern Southland Gallery is the John Money Collection of international artworks, amassed by US-based expatriate New Zealander Dr John Money over 50 years and gifted to the gallery in 2003. This exotic and eclectic collection includes large Dogon, Bambarra and Baga carvings from West Africa, along with an internationally important body of paintings by US artist Lowell Nesbitt. Works by key 20th-century New Zealand artists Rita Angus and Theo Schoon, and Arnhem Land (Australia) paintings and carvings are also a major part of the collection.
The Eastern Southland Gallery also presents temporary solo, touring, and group exhibitions, plus a range of performances, workshops and artist projects.
The Hokonui Moonshine Museum is across the road from the Gallery.
