Drink whisky at Hokonui Moonshine Museum

Add to my REAL NZ Festival trip planner Added to your REAL NZ Festival trip planner

Hokonui Moonshine is world-famous in New Zealand! The Hokonui Moonshine Museum in Gore in Southland explores over 130 years of illicit whisky-making, and through a variety of media, our southern drinking culture is examined.

"Hokonui" or "Hokonui Moonshine" had its origins in the Highlands of Scotland, but made its presence felt in the Gore district with the advent of localised Prohibition in 1902.

See how local moonshiners coped in the face of police opposition and how Kiwi ingenuity foiled (and often failed to foil) the Customs men.

"Old Hokonui" whisky, made to the original local recipe, is one of a number of popular items of merchandise on sale at the museum.

The Eastern Southland Gallery is right across the road from the Hokonui Moonshine Museum.
