Dame Kiri Te Kanawa: A Gala Evening
Add to my REAL NZ Festival trip planner Added to your REAL NZ Festival trip plannerThis is a singular opportunity to hear one of the world’s great and beloved sopranos perform in her own country at a time of heightened passion and intensity.
The legendary Dame Kiri Te Kanawa returns home to New Zealand to join the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and conductor Pietari Inkinen for one concert only, with an impressive line-up of top New Zealand talent on stage at Auckland’s Vector Arena.
This glamorous night of well-loved arias and light classic favourites from Verdi to Andrew Lloyd Webber begins with a theatrical Māori welcome based on the traditional powhiri, before the internationally-renowned NZSO provides the orchestral backdrop for the dazzling Dame Kiri, rising star baritone Kawiti Waetford and acclaimed Kiwi bass Teddy Tahu Rhodes.
Classic Broadway hits meet the opera stage in this impressive programme which suits every musical taste.
Hold onto your seats when Dame Kiri performs Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Memory from Cats. Enjoy much-loved favourites such as Climb Ev'ry Mountain from The Sound of Music.
Experience superb Māori songs Ka Mate and Tarakihi as well as the power of World in Union, featuring the impressive Opera Factory Chorus.
This unique gala concert simply can’t be missed – there’s no better way to celebrate New Zealand and the end of the Festival and the Tournament.
The gala evening starts at 6.30pm on Saturday 22 October, 2011.
Presented by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in association with the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation.
