Birthplace of Rugby in New Zealand – 1870
Add to my REAL NZ Festival trip planner Added to your REAL NZ Festival trip plannerA celebration of Nelson as "the Birthplace of New Zealand Rugby", the re-enactment of New Zealand's first-ever game of Rugby will be a great occasion.
A fun-filled family day with a festival atmosphere at the Botanics Reserve (the 'Birthplace of New Zealand Rugby'), where the re-enactment of New Zealand's first game in 1870 will be staged.
The first recognised game of Rugby played in New Zealand took place on 14 May, 1870 between a Nelson College side and the Nelson Rugby Football Club. A crowd of around 200 gathered at The Botanics Reserve to watch an exciting new version of football, brought to New Zealand by Charles Monro — the "father of Rugby Union in New Zealand". Its likely none of the participants realised the sport they were playing would one day become New Zealand's National game.
Members are welcome at the Trafalgar Park clubrooms that evening to watch the Rugby World Cup 2011 match between Italy and Russia live on the big screen.
