Southern Alps on the doorstep
Canterbury must be the only place in the world where – within two hours of an international airport – you can ski at a world-class alpine resort, play golf, bungy jump, go rafting, mountain biking, wind surfing, whale watching or visit vineyards and exquisite public gardens.
New Zealand's Garden City has changed a lot since a major earthquake in February this year. Even so it will play host to REAL New Zealand Festival events and Fanzones during the Tournament. Christchurch is the home of the Crusaders and described as a must-see for any rugby fan visiting New Zealand.
The Christchurch Arts Festival, on during September 2011, is a special event that only happens every two years, presenting a rich, diverse and bold programme of arts and cultural events. While Christchurch is not hosting Tournament games, its Fanzone will be at the heart of the celebration with a programme of exhibitions, theatre, music and will be the place to watch, yarn and cheer.
Beyond the city, fine wine and wildlife cruises are on offer in the picturesque bays and seaside villages of Banks Peninsula. Or drive north to the rejuvenating hot pools of Hanmer Springs, and whale watching at Kaikōura.
